Bashkir National Movement

The Bashkir national movement aims to acquire political and economic rights and full independence of the Republic (state) of Bashkortostan - a part of historical Bashkiria. Currently, the republic is an autonomous multiethnic entity within the Russian Federation.

The origins of the movement date back to the era of the Bashkir wars, rebellions, and the Civil War of 1773-1775, when the people of the region rose to defend their interests, rising against the empire. One of the key figures of the movement is Zaki Validi - the founder of the statehood of the Bashkir people, the creator of the First Bashkir Republic in 1917, the founder of modern Bashkortostan. His political ideas played a significant role in the federalization of Russia after the Civil War of 1917-1919.

After the collapse of the USSR, there was a new resurgence of the Bashkir national movement. The republic and its people gained additional rights and freedoms in cultural and economic spheres.

In modern Russia, under an authoritarian regime, the Bashkir national movement, like other similar movements, is experiencing hard times. Any discussions about the rights of the people of Bashkortostan are equated by Russian authorities to separatism and extremism, and there is suppression of national self-awareness. The Bashkir people are experiencing ethnocide, and in the conditions of the ongoing Russian aggression towards sovereign Ukraine, Bashkirs are sent to fight and die for the interests of the Putin regime and genocide. The Bashkir people are experiencing linguicide when the Russian government deliberately eradicates the Bashkir language from all spheres of life in the republic, removing it from educational programs of educational institutions.

Despite the tremendous pressure, activists of the Bashkir National Movement continue to fight for the freedom of Bashkortostan and for the rights of its residents to a peaceful, happy life, the right to choose their own government in the republic, to speak and receive education in their native language, for the right to be independent of Moscow's dictate.
